The Virgin Group has announced plans for Virgin Cruises, a Miami-based company.

Virgin has plans to design and build two new world class cruise ships as part of the venture, according to a news release. The company will team up with Bain Capital.

“(Virgin Group founder Richard) Branson has deep pockets and has a reputation of doing the unexpected, so we are excited about that. We love new ships, new innovations and new trends being introduced to the industry,” said Vicky Garcia, COO and co-owner of Coral Springs-based Cruise Planners, in a Sun Sentinel article.

Tom McAlpin, formerly president and CEO of The World, Residences at Sea and before that, president of Disney Cruise Line, will be CEO of Virgin Cruises, according to the release.

A launch date for the cruise line has not yet been announced. – Katherine Kallergis
