Everglades land deal plagued by details

The $1.34 billion deal for the largest public land buy in Florida
history now needs a workable land use plan. The 180,000-acre
purchase of U.S. Sugar Corp. farmland now calls for a public process to decide how to restore
flows from Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades. The South Florida Water
Management District proposes using a series of reservoirs and treatment
areas to store, clean and deliver water to what remains of the
Everglades. The deal would lead to massive construction projects to
create the infrastructure to store and treat water that would be moved
south through canals.
