Miami homes sinking

Homeowners in Grosse Point Highlands, a neighborhood bordered by Northwest 27th and 37th avenues and Northwest Seventh and West Flagler streets, could be underwater, but not like many Floridians. The homes’ sinking has more to do with geology than home values — the area is built above an old quarry and is settling and sinking an inch or two a year. About 20 homes out of the neighborhood’s 478 have reported damage. The homeowners say the city should pay for the repairs. Some Miami officials said insurers should pay.
