Renovations begin at Fort Lauderdale’s future NAACP offices

Construction is set to begin today on the future headquarters of Fort Lauderdale’s NAACP chapter — the former home of one of its early leaders. The home, at 1100 NW Sixth Street, was that of the late Eula Johnson, the fourth president of the chapter and the woman credited with launching the effort to desegregate Fort Lauderdale’s beaches in the 1960s. Johnson passed away in 2001, and the Northwest Community Redevelopment Agency purchased her property in 2008. The agency will fund the $185,000 restoration project, which is slated for completion by the summer. [Miami Herald]
