Port of Miami rail project underway

The first phase of construction on a $50 million rail project at the
Port of Miami begins today, part of a large-scale renovation of the port
that will be completed in 2014. The project, which includes fixing a
bridge that was damaged by Hurricane Wilma, also involves renovating the
Florida East Coast Railway Track that links the port to Hialeah, and
building a new rail yard on Dodge Island. The plans are aimed at
improving capacity to facilitate megaships heading to the Panama Canal.
“This is all about the post-Panamax world,” said Bill Johnson, the
port’s director. “This means we’ll be able to connect the port to 70 to
78 percent of the American population by rail in one to four days.” [Miami
