The new Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science broke ground today at Museum Park, marking the beginning of construction for the planned 250,000-square-foot complex. The project, which was designed by Grimshaw Architects, will include a 3-D planetarium and a 600,000-square-foot aquarium. “Great cities are home to top-tier museums,” said Tirsh and Dan Bell, co-chairs of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, in a statement. “[The museum] will be an outstanding economic and architectural asset for the city.” The project received $165 million in voter-approved funding for design in construction in 2004. The museum has since raised $70 million in private funding. — Alexander Britell
