Despite residents’ concerns, more prisons remain possible for Southwest Broward

Broward commissioners failed to quell concerns of Pembroke Pines residents over more prisons coming to 60 acres of publicly owned land in Southwest Broward, the Miami Herald reported.

Commissioner Lois Wexler had proposed a 20-year moratorium on construction of prisons, jails or detention centers on the land near the site of a planned federal detention center in Southwest Ranches.

Pembroke Pines residents are already fighting the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement plan for a 1,500-bed detention center, and Wexler said they don’t want the additional possibility of prisons on land that was originally acquired in 1991 for that very purpose.

“My motivation was to be able to give some kind of comfort or relief to the residents as far as that select piece of property was concerned because of what they have been going through,’’ she said

But county commissioners rejected the proposal last week as they want to leave their options open as the jail population fluctuates. The Herald noted that the county’s incarceration count has been falling of late. [Miami Herald]
