Publix leads new vision for Pompano Beach

The opening of a renovated Publix supermarket is the first step in a plan to revitalize Pompano Beach, the Sun Sentinel reported. “This new Publix is the first step we’re taking to attract new business to the area,” said Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher. “We’re tired of losing business to our neighbors, Boca Raton and Lauderdale.” The city’s redevelopment plans include larger sidewalks to help spur more pedestrian traffic and narrow streets, along with a planned 8-acre park close to Pompano Beach Boulevard’s pier. “We want to create more room for street-side cafe seating and other pedestrian activity,” said Kim Briesemeister, co-executive director at the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency.
