House-to-school conversion plan dropped in Coconut Grove

The plan to convert a 100-year-old house in Coconut Grove into a 100-student pre-school and elementary school has been withdrawn from the Miami Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board. The under-contract plan to develop the 0.75-acre site, located at 1621 South Bayshore Drive across from Mercy Hospital, was dropped after wide-spread community opposition to a plan locals felt would bring “commercial intrusion” into their quite residential area. The property is now being placed back on the market.

“We withdrew the application during our hearing today,” said Joan Rodriguez, owner of the Village Montessori School on Coral Way. “I was faced with… opposition that made it financially impossible for me to continue.” [Miami Herald] — Christopher Cameron
