Walmart is going ahead with a new supercenter in Northwest-Miami Dade County, the company announced today. The 186,000-square-foot project, which got final approval this week from the Miami-Dade County Community Zoning Appeals Board, will begin construction in 2013. The store, to be located at NW 32 Avenue and 79th Street, is slated to open in 2014.

“We think this store will be part of the solution for folks who want more job opportunities, or affordable grocery options close to where they live or work,” Steven Restivo, senior director of community affairs at Walmart, told The Real Deal.

Restivo said the decision to open the new location did not have a bearing on Walmart’s desire to open a Midtown location. “Our plan at Midtown continues to move forward,” he said.

Walmart opened another location, a Walmart Neighborhood Market, in Hialeah Gardens in October.

In August, the company announced plans to build its first Neighborhood Market in Flagami, which is slated to launch construction next year.

“Walmart’s investment is a vote of confidence in this community and will bring a much needed economic boost to an area that hasn’t experienced major development in a long time,” Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime, who represents Northwest Miami-Dade, said in a statement. “For the many residents who live in the neighborhood, the new employment opportunities and affordable prices at the Walmart Supercenter are welcome.”
