The Community Redevelopment Agency in Jupiter has released details about the $5 million “funky fishing village” project in the works, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Residents raised concerns about traffic and costs at a meeting at Jupiter Beach Resort last week over the redevelopment proposed for State Road A1A, from Jupiter Beach Road north to U.S. 1, the newspaper said.

Inlet Village will be a pedestrian-friendly retail promenade outfitted with on-street parking, sidewalks on both sides, new street lights, 4-foot-wide bicycle paths and marked crosswalks. Along the one-mile stretch, contractors would bury power lines, install landscaping and dig new drainage, officials said.

The agency said it would also consider additional public boat docks and a new four-level parking garage. The four-acre site is currently used as a parking lot.

“On-street parking slows traffic and improves pedestrian safety,” said Stephanie Thoburn, assistant director of planning and zoning, said at the meeting.

Plans are expected to be filed later this summer. Of the $5 million in A1A improvements, a federal grant will pay about $1.5 million. The town will pay the rest of it. Construction is slated to begin early next year and wrap up in 2015, the report said. [Palm Beach Post]Mark Maurer
