Gloria Estefan, among South Florida’s most prominent residents, envisions a drive-in movie theater for boats at the restored Miami Marine Stadium.

Once a top venue for performers like Estefan, the stadium was devastated by Hurricane Andrew in 1993. The 1980s pop star told the New Times she would like the restoration now underway to take into account Miami’s boating culture.

“I can see Art Basel installations. I can see demonstrations and games, because [architect] Hilario [Candela] is coming up with a new, larger stage made up of three connected parts, so you could actually have a soccer game on the water, for example. I envision sort of a drive-in movie [theater] for boats at some point. And obviously, I see concerts,” Estefan told the alt-weekly.

The stadium recently had its site plan approved and is now in the throes of raising $20 million over the next two years in order to begin restoration. [New Times]Emily Schmall
