Five of the city’s seven council members voted against a deal to allow Perez to acquire 19 properties in downtown Homestead for less than 40 percent of the land’s true value, the Miami Herald reported. Perez, who recently resigned as Dade Medical CEO after being arrested on perjury charges, did not attend Tuesday’s meeting. He also faces one felony charge for not disclosing a 1990 sex crime conviction and 2002 battery arrest on government forms.

The land sale was approved by council members in 2011 before finding out that Perez had hired the wife of former Homestead Mayor Steve Bateman as a consultant. Proponents of an expanded Dade Medical campus in Homestead believed the project would attract more students and stimulate surrounding businesses. [Miami Herald]Eric Kalis
