American Express is looking to consolidate its South Florida outposts with the purchase of a 40-acre parcel for a regional headquarters in Sunrise.

The financial services company already has 3,500 employees in Plantation, Miaramar and Weston offices, and will build a 400,000-square-foot building to consolidate all of its operations on the east side of NW 136th Aveue, just south of Sunrise Boulevard.

“We’ll have the opportunity to bring together approximately 3,200 employees who will eventually move into our proposed new campus,” Stacey Orange, an American Express spokeswoman, told the Sun Sentinel. “Our expectation is that our business in South Florida would continue to grow along with our overall business, and enable us to continue adding jobs here over the long term.”

The purchase, Sunrise City Manager Alan Cohen told the Sun Sentinel, will keep employees in South Florida. Previously, he said, the company had been considering basing its operations in other states.

Construction on the new building could begin in the fourth quarter of 2014 and will take roughly three years to complete.

AmEx has been operating in South Florida for 40 years and currently leases space for its customer service, technology, finance, human resources, marketing and sales functions in the area. [Sun Sentinel]Julie Strickland
