The Miami Heat basketball team is in talks with Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez over a 10-year extension on its deal to play at AmericanAirlines Arena.

The team is looking to get about $6.5 million annually in hotel taxes in order to subsidize operations. The deal the Heat has now doesn’t expire until 2029, but the team is pushing for an extension now to help invest in forthcoming renovations.

The focus of the negotiations is the extent of upgrades the team is open to making at the stadium. Commissioner Bruno Barreiro has sponsored a resolution calling for the mayor to finalize a deal with the Heat by Feb. 22, roughly one month after the commission meeting slated for next week.

AmericanAirlines Arena opened at 601 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami in 2000.

The Heat’s assistant coach Juwan Howard recently purchased a Coral Gables home for $3.4 million, as reported last week. [Miami Herald]Mark Maurer
