Construction of the Swerdlow Group’s Shoppes at Civica in Miami’s Health District is underway.

Contractor Kaufman Lynn Construction has started work on the 57,000-square-foot retail project on 1.9 acres at 1050 Northwest 14th Street, the company announced Tuesday. The retail component is the first phase of a larger development planned for the site.

The two-story building would have a mix of 20 stores and restaurants. Swerdlow obtained $30 million in construction and permanent financing for the Shoppes from Sabadell United Bank in December.

“With so many people in and out of the surrounding healthcare facilities and courthouse, this area really needs more dining opportunities,” Kaufman president and CEO Michael Kaufman said. — Eric Kalis
