Both PortMiami director Bill Johnson and Royal Caribbean Cruises are blocking the way for soccer icon David Beckham’s plan to bring soccer to Miami.

Weeks ago Johnson pitched renderings for a sprawling commercial complex with hotels, apartments, offices and expo space to developers in Singapore, Tokyo and Shanghai. Johnson’s plan would see the development of the entire 36-acre site, including the 12 acres where Beckham hopes to bring a soccer stadium, according to the Miami Herald.

Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean Cruises has announced that it opposes Beckham’s plan, due to traffic concerns and its own interest in developing the site.

“What we were doing was to literally start to garner interest globally,” in the site, Johnson said. “We were upfront. We said there was a recent interest expressed by David Beckham about a soccer stadium, and that would be addressed in the next six months.” [Miami Herald]Christopher Cameron
