Miami-Dade voters could determine appraiser’s powers

A Miami-Dade commissioner thinks voters should determine whether the property appraiser must answer to county administrators or operate as an independent elected official with no government interference.

Commissioner Esteban Bovo is proposing a November ballot question to give voters the chance to clarify the appraiser’s role, the Miami Herald reported. The measure is expected to be considered during a Thursday committee meeting. Any change to the appraiser position would take effect at the beginning of 2017.

Bovo’s proposal follows a lawsuit former Property Appraiser Carlos Lopez-Cantera filed against the county last August. Lopez-Cantera vacated the position in January after being appointed Florida’s lieutenant governor. His suit called for the appraiser to be independent and only answer to county residents.

The county recently asked a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge to dismiss the complaint following Lopez-Cantera’s departure. No ruling has been made. [Miami Herald] — Eric Kalis
