3,000 student charter school coming to Miami

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners on Thursday approved a plan that calls for what could be the largest charter school in Florida.

With 3,000 students, the school, known as Pinecrest Academy, would seat more pupils than any other charter school in the state, according to attorney and State Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, who represented the property owner.

“It was slated to be a shopping center, another strip mall basically,’’ he said. “So we decided a charter school instead of a strip mall.”

The Academica run school has already received a charter from the Miami-Dade School Board, according to the Miami Herald. It could open at Southwest Eighth Street and Southwest 152nd Avenue as early as 2015. [Miami Herald]Christopher Cameron
