Immigration building in Miami could give way to hotel

Miami’s foreboding federal immigration headquarters on Biscayne Boulevard is about to see a dramatic makeover.

The building, which is located 7880 Biscayne Boulevard, is slated to become a hotel, featuring a fitness center, rooftop terrace restaurant and panoramic views of Miami’s Upper East Side, according to the Miami Herald.

“It’s going to be a big movement for that corner,” said Jonathan Cardello, co-principal at ADD Inc., the architecture firm designing the project for a group of Canadian and Chinese developers and investors. “Having people living and staying on Biscayne Boulevard is going to be big. I think it will be a catalyst for the area.”

If built, the Triton Center will include 135 hotel rooms in the old tower, which would be stripped, gutted, retopped, and covered in stucco and glass. Three new buildings, with 317 condo units, would be built on the remained of the block.

There is no current timeline for construction, but next month development plans will before the city’s Urban Design Review Board. [Miami Herald] – Christopher Cameron
