A Palm Beach County attorney is caught up in an alleged foreclosure scheme that persuaded scores of struggling homeowners to sign away their deeds. He is now the subject of a Florida Bar complaint.

The complaint against Howard Feinmel comes two years after the Florida Attorney General’s office shut down the Fidelity Land Trust Co., charging the company, its operators and affiliate firms with selling homeowners on a complicated legal “scheme” that promised to make underwater mortgages disappear, according to the Palm Beach Post.

While Feinmel was not named in the state’s case, the Bar’s complaint says he represented Fidelity Land Trust and filed “frivolous” lawsuits.

At one point in 2012, an estimated 250 homeowners statewide, including 84 in Palm Beach County, signed their deeds over to Fidelity under the belief that the company could cancel their mortgage. [Palm Beach Post]Christopher Cameron
