Ft. Lauderdale approves new Broward treatment center

Fort Lauderdale commissioners voted to approve a plan to build a substance abuse treatment facility that has been stalled for more than 10 years.

The plan would replace the existing Broward Addiction Recovery Center, located at 1011 Southwest Second Court, with a larger one at Southwest 27th Street and Fourth Avenue in the Edgewood neighborhood, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

For more than a decade, the proposed location has been controversial and stalled numerous times.

Edgewood locals argued that the BARC would negatively affect hundreds of young adults who attend three alternative schools nearby.

“I think BARC is an unbelievable facility, I’ve taken people there and I’ve seen amazing results,” said Commissioner Romney Rogers. “But this facility has no business being next to 2,000 students.”
