Investment manager proposes Biscayne Boulevard museum

A rather unconventional anvil-shaped building could soon rise on Biscayne Boulevard. The structure would house private offices and a pair of monumental works by celebrated artists.

The proposed building, designed by Miami’s Arquitectonica, would have almost no windows. City planners say they’re having trouble reconciling it with the Miami 21 zoning code, according to the Miami Herald.

The building’s shape and dimensions are precisely tailored to display two works — a tall conical installation by light artist James Turrell, and an undulating, 200-foot-long steel piece by sculptor Richard Serra.

The project is being bankrolled by Bruce Berkowitz, founder of Miami-based Fairholme Capital Management.

“We wanted to create a unique space that combined both work and play — business and arts and education,” Berkowitz said. “We thought about the idea of how to mix that all together, and there was an opportunity to purchase the works, and then we started to think about the building in relationship to the works.” [Miami Herald] – Christopher Cameron
