    Debuys Property Investment Group is planning to build a massive development of single- and multi-family homes, park land and commercial space on a swath of the 1,900 acres in Parkland known as the Wedge, the Sun Sentinel reported.

    Parkland city commissioners approved the plan, and a rezoning of the land necessary for the commercial development. The Wedge, located at the northwest corner of County Line Road and the proposed extension of University Drive, was part of Palm Beach County until 2009 when a boundary change transferred it to Broward County.   • Miami-Dade tax howls heard

    Protests have followed the receipt of higher property tax rate notices
    in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. On Thursday afternoon, a group
    calling itself Fair Property Tax For All coordinated a series of
    protests at three sites in Miami-Dade County, and many Broward
    residents in cities facing high increases have echoed that anger.
    Hollywood, Miramar, Parkland, Pembroke Pines, West Park and Weston have
    proposed increases of at least 20 percent to compensate for plummeting
    assessed property values. [more]

  • Drywall claim extension granted

    Homeowners in Parkland have until May 31 to file claims against WCI
    Communities related to defective Chinese-made drywall panels, a federal
    bankruptcy judge ruled. Judge Kevin J. Carey granted the extension
    Monday in Delaware federal bankruptcy court, expanding the claims
    deadline against the bankrupt builder past the February 2 deadline. The
    builder told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that Chinese
    drywall went into some of the builder’s homes before WCI Communities
    filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. [more]

  • Drywall woes increase in Parkland

    Officials in Parkland want to investigate reports of problems stemming
    from Chinese drywall used in post-2003 housing. Resident of at least
    six homes complained that the building material is seeping sulfuric
    acid and triggered asthma attacks. State and federal regulators have
    investigated in the city and other locations, but Parkland Commissioner
    Jared Moskowitz wants to take faster action and has sent city testers
    out to address a situation he says is becoming unlivable.
