    Branding a blighted downtown as an arts and entertainment district, making streets more pedestrian-friendly and luring new restaurants helped redevelop the urban cores of Delray Beach and West Palm Beach, according to two former community redevelopment leaders who have turned their experience into a book.

    Christopher Brown, former Community Redevelopment Agency director in Delray Beach, and Kim Briesemeister, who held that position in West Palm Beach, have just put out a handbook on urban development, “Reinventing Your City.”

    Amid the book’s launch, the duo, who now run an urban development firm, Redevelopment Management Associates, told the The Real Deal their thoughts on the key elements that led to successful development in West Palm and Delray and what challenges the cities face in the future. [more]

    Investor and entrepreneur Richard A. Chaifetz picked up an oceanfront Delray Beach estate for $34 million.

    Palm Beach County records show Chaifetz, founder of the Chicago-based Chaifetz Group, bought the 31,786-square-foot mansion at 921 South Ocean Boulevard. The 1.7-acre property includes seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and five half-baths. It was listed for sale at $39.95 million in January, according to

    Chaifetz bought the home through a revocable trust, records show. 921 South Ocean Boulevard LLC, managed by president and real estate attorney Cristofer A. Bennardo, is the seller. The Boca Raton-based firm paid $9.3 million for the property in 2010. [more]

    Publicly traded PetMed Express will relocate its headquarters from Pompano Beach to Delray Beach, where the retailer of pet supplies and medications has acquired two office buildings.

    PetMed paid $18.5 million to two buildings in Delray Beach with a combined total of 184,122 square feet. The seller was an affiliate of Atlanta-based Stockbridge Funds. The sale price amounted to about $100 per square foot. [more]
