“Hideous” Brooklyn home faces demolition
Landlord caves to pressure from residents over cantilevered two-story property
The owner of a stalled construction site in Homecrest, Brooklyn, plans to tear it down after many residents have derided it as “hideous.”
The cantilevered two-story house at 1882 East 12th Street was constructed on top of a bungalow. The city issued a stop-work order on the site after a neighbor argued that the underlying slab was intended to support a porch rather than a full building, Brooklyn Daily reported. Last summer, landlord Joseph Durzieh received city approval to continue construction. But Durzieh wrote a letter to the city last month expressing his interest in demolishing the site. A formal application might be submitted next week.
Durzieh tapped engineer James Feuerborn of Thornton Tomasetti to devise plans for the demolition.
“It’s a gaming of the system which produced this awful monstrosity,” local architect Walter Maffei told Brooklyn Daily. “The application was pure fantasy and total disregard for any policies and procedures required by the DOB.” [Brooklyn Daily] — Mark Maurer
