Zohran Mamdani was elected to the state Assembly in 2020, unseating Democratic incumbent Aravella Simotas to represent a Queens district that includes Astoria and Long Island City. He was re-elected in 2022. In a major upset, Mamdani won the Democratic primary for mayor in June 2025, edging out the long-presumed front-runner, Gov. Andrew Cuomo. A Democratic Socialist, Mamdani ran on a platform that he would freeze rents for the city’s housing stock.
