The Landmarks Preservation Commission is expected to approve today a $16 million redesign of 9.75-acre Washington Square Park that would shift the park’s centerpiece fountain, level the park, move two dog runs, flatten three asphalt mounds, replace a plaza with a lawn, and add a four-foot granite and iron fence to the perimeter along with gates that could be locked at night. Neighbors are worried the park’s character of openness is being violated with the fence. more [NYT]
