For the birds, skyscraper lights may go out

City officials and bird experts are asking landlords to switch off all nonessential lights from midnight until daylight on the upper floors of skyscrapers during September and October to save migrating birds. Since 1997, more than 4,000 migratory birds have been killed or injured from colliding into New York’s skyscrapers. The lights apparently disrupt the birds’ navigation systems that rely on lights as visual clues, causing them to crash into windows. more [Newsday]
