South Bronx jail proposal panned

The city’s plan to build a new jail on the South Bronx waterfront is upsetting some in the neighborhood. Though the new lock-up is expected to create 700 new jobs in the area, community groups and elected officials say there’s probably a better use for the now-vacant land. Representative Jose Serrano, who represents the area, has described the city’s plan, “the end of a race to the bottom.” more [NYDN]
