The former Episcopal church that once housed the notorious Limelight nightclub will be reopened next year as a retail mini-mall. Citing gentrification and police pressures in Chelsea that make it “difficult to get permits from the community board” for a nightclub, landlord Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation has said it will convert the legendary 12,000-square-foot venue on Sixth Avenue at West 20th Street into a retail and restaurant hub, likely anchored by clothing retailer H & M. The building’s current tenant, Avalon nightclub, will vacate in early 2007. more [NYP]
