Sunnyside landmarking battle

A meeting earlier this week about the city’s plans to landmark Sunnyside Gardens “turned rowdy,” exposing deep divisions in the community about the proposal. Sunnyside Gardens was the first planned garden city in the U.S., and although zoning rules already restrict major changes to homes in the neighborhood, some residents worry that landmark status will not only severely hamper their ability to make alterations to houses but also drive up the costs of alterations that are allowed. more [NY1 via Queens Crap]
