A 10-acre, city-owned parcel on Roosevelt Island near the Queensboro Bridge may open up for development if Goldwater Hospital merges its operations with Coler Hospital, which is on the north side of the island. Although city officials have said they do not yet know how they would seek to redevelop the land, some Roosevelt Island residents are already protesting the possibility of housing being built on the site. “Given the high cost of real estate in New York these days, it seems inevitable that it’s going to be expensive housing,” said the president of the Roosevelt Island Residents Association, Matthew Katz. Katz and other Roosevelt Island residents say adding residential development to the area would strain the island’s already taxed infrastructure. more [Sun]
