The city’s recently approved capital budget earmarked $9.54 million for the renovation of 107 Suffolk Street, the former elementary school that houses two arts groups, the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center and Artists Alliance Inc. Although the groups have engaged in a long-running squabble about the building’s management, both are pleased that the façde and roof of the city-owned property are set to be renovated, as are officials who pushed for the funding. “This money will prevent the building from literally falling apart,” said City Councilmember Alan Gerson. “One way or another, it needed to be fixed up. The money will allow the great art created in the building to continue.” more [Villager]
