Upstream towns paying for pollution

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo won several major environmental settlements with municipalities for dumping sewage into the Bronx River. The settlements– with Yonkers, White Plains, Scarsdale and Greenburgh–total more than $7 million. The money will be administered through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to protect the river from pollution and to expand an environmental education program in the area. The NFWF will issue requests for proposals in October, and distribute the money in grants beginning next spring. The settlements follow an order made last year by the New York Supreme Court requiring the towns to improve their sewage systems to prevent further pollution. more [NYDN]
