The waterfront neighborhood near Downtown Brooklyn features wood-frame houses dating back before the Civil War. Walt Whitman wrote Leaves of Grass at 99 Ryerson Street. A proposed landmark district runs from Carlton to Classon avenues, between Myrtle Avenue and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
