Village Starbucks closes

February 21, 2008 11:59AM

A Starbucks has closed at 21 East 8th Street in Greenwich Village, near NYU. A letter posted in the window of the coffeehouse, located between University and Fifth avenues, begins: “This thing we have together, it’s bigger than this place. And these sorts of things happen …” Last month, the East Village Community Coalition called for a retail zoning plan that would limit the spread of Starbucks and other chain stores. Starbucks announced last month that it would close 100 underperforming stores around the country and scale back expansion plans.
