Doomed school wins design award

The city’s Julia Richman Educational Complex on East 67th Street, which is slated for demolition, has won a national design award from the American Architectural Foundation. The 82-year-old building, which the city has spent about $30 million renovating over the past 10 years, is part of a land swap with CUNY’s Hunter College. The college will build a high-rise science center, and in exchange agreed to sell its sell its auxiliary campus on East 25th Street to a developer that will include a new school in any development. Parents and neighborhood leaders are fighting to save the six autonomous schools, which have been commended by the Gates Foundation as a model for urban education.
