City reworks Coney Island plan

The city has revised its plans for Coney Island in an effort to break a deadlock with developers over how to create a year-round attraction. While the city still wants stores and up to 5,000 apartments along Surf Avenue, it will reduce a city-owned open-air amusement park north of the Boardwalk between KeySpan Park and the New York Aquarium from 15 acres to 9 acres. The city wants to create a permanent amusement district by buying land from local property owners like Thor Equities and the Vourderis family, owners of Deno’s Amusement Park and the Wonder Wheel. Property owners would be able to develop the rest of their property if they follow the city’s master plan.
