Controller William Thompson, a likely mayoral candidate, has called on Mayor Michael Bloomberg to drop plans to add retail an Atlantic Avenue jail and sell the shuttered Brooklyn facility instead. Thompson says re-opening and doubling the jail could hurt Downtown Brooklyn’s economic growth. Community leaders are considering filing a lawsuit to block the “jail with retail” plans, which have been in the works since 2005. The jailed closed in 2003.
