NYU says it will build better Village playhouse

Greenwich Village activists are protesting a New York University proposal to demolish the historic Provincetown Playhouse, where famed playwright Eugene O’Neill’s plays were first produced. But NYU says a new building, which would be used by its law school, would include a theater that would more faithfully represent the original playhouse, before 1940s renovations changed it. The controversy is the first to erupt since NYU announced in January that it would consult the community when it builds and also expand outside its central campus. Last week, The Real Deal reported that NYU plans to add 1 to 1.5 million square feet of new space in the Washington Square area.
