The Bronx’s last big independent bookstore, Paperbacks Plus, is set to close at the end of the month. The 38-year-old bookstore on Riverdale Avenue has hosted big-name authors like Nobel Prize-winner Toni Morrison, Ed Koch, Pete Hamill, Frank and Malachy McCourt, as well as all known Yankee-turned-author, from Yogi Berra to Derek Jeter. The 75-year-old co-founder and owner, Fern Jaffe, is retiring.
