Gentrification is threatening the Lower East Side’s low-income tenants
as landlords allegedly try to force them out of buildings with
frivolous lawsuits. As 28 percent of Lower East Side
residents live at or below the poverty line, the homelessness and
eviction prevention service Project Home is trying to help these
tenants keep their homes by informing them of their rights and
accompanying them to court to act as interpreters.
