On Fifth Avenue at 13th Street, an abandoned building with a long history will soon be redeveloped into an apartment house with one triplex, three duplexes and ground-floor retail. The Real Deal first reported the Village property’s sale, which was brokered by Massey Knakal. Once the site of the early chain restaurant Schrafft’s, 61 Fifth Avenue was designed by Bloch & Hesse, which gave the site a light curve on the front, making the Schrafft’s lettering visible several blocks away. The Lone Star Cafe took over in the 1980s. Later, while the building was home to a produce market, a fire gutted the building and it was left abandoned.
