AvalonBay responds to lawsuit

August 15, 2008 01:49PM

AvalonBay Communities has responded to a federal discrimination lawsuit filed against its Lower East Side apartment building, Avalon Chrystie Place at 229 Chrystie Street, between East Houston and Stanton Streets. AvalonBay is being sued by the Department of Justice for allegedly violating the Fair Housing Act by not making its building accessible to disabled people. The developer said in a statement that the 361-unit rental building is in full compliance with all accessibility codes and laws. Avalon Bay said the building provides housing to disabled people, and abides by New York City Local Law 58 accessibility rules. The company also claimed the lawsuit is about the building’s construction, not about “discrimination against any specified individuals.” TRD
