Stucco facades had fallen out of fashion for being unattractive and causing structural problems, but they are making a comeback in New York City. The synthetic formula of stucco has been improved, and its inexpensiveness is a draw for architects and developers. Compared with glass, brick and limestone, stucco is cheaper by more than half. At a new condo building at 215 East 81st Street, the Exterior Insulation and Finish System, or EIFS, stucco cost about $60 per square foot, compared to $200 a square foot for limestone.
