Hundreds of elevators in city public housing have failed thousands of inspections since January 2004, according to a study by the Manhattan borough president’s office expected to be released today. The study compiled data from routine inspections by the New York City Housing Authority, available on the Department of Buildings Web site. Of the 18,102 routine inspections of elevators in public housing, 13,639 received unsatisfactory ratings while 4,463 received satisfactory ones. Elevator safety in the city’s 343 public housing complexes has been an issue of increasing concern since a five-year-old boy fell to his death while trying to escape from a stalled elevator last month.
