The temporary park at Pier 1 in Brooklyn Heights that offered visitors a preview of the much larger Brooklyn Bridge Park brought in 192,675 visitors in its 13 weeks since opening. The 26,000-square-foot park received 79 percent of its visitors from outside the surrounding neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and Dumbo; 25 percent from 52 other countries and another 17 percent from outside New York City. Proponents of Brooklyn Bridge Park hope that the geographic diversity of visitors to the temporary park will help dispel notions that the permanent one will become “a fancy back yard for the rich,” in the words of Marian Koval, president of the waterfront park’s conservancy.
