Crane topples over on Staten Island

An 80-foot crane lifting steel beams from a barge on Staten Island
toppled onto the shore this morning, injuring the crane operator. The
cause of the fall is under investigation. The crane was lifting beams from a barge onto
Atlantic Salt’s storage facility in the New Brighton section of Staten
Island. Fifty gallons of oil spilled when the crane tipped over at 561
Richmond Terrace, the Coast Guard said. The city has seen nine crane collapse deaths since March, and the DOB introduced new crane license requirements yesterday.
