Much to the dismay of preservationists and tenants, five buildings on West 28th Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue, a historical stretch known as Tin Pan Alley, are up for sale. The buildings, which are four-story brownstones with stores on the first floor and apartments above, are being sold as a group for $44 million. Tin Pan Alley was the place where music publishers and songwriters, including Irving Berlin and George Gershwin, worked between the 1890s and 1950s.
